Going for a walk around Sapporo Station

This time, my blog is from Sapporo, Hokkaido, which is northern part of Japan.  Here are two sightseeing spots which in walking distance from Sapporo station.

The first location is the former Hokkaido Government Office Building.  This was constructed in 1888 as a base for administration of Hokkaido, and rebuilt in 1911 after being devastated by fire.  The building has American neo-baroque style structure.

You can go inside of the building, and can see the history of Hokkaido. (admission free)

 Gaslight.

Next, let's go the other side of Sapporo station.

Walking 5 minutes from Sapporo station, there is Hokkaido University.  The university was founded in 1876 as Sapporo Agricultural School.

William Smith Clark, who had been the president of the University of Massachusetts Amherstwho, was the first vice-principal of the school.   His word, "Boys, be ambitious" is still the faith of this university.

The university is full of natures.  The small river is now artificial river, however, the salmon used to come up to this location before.

The aspen trees were imported from the United States and planted in 1912.

Now the Hokkaido University is the famous sightseeing location to breathe fresh air.
