Tsumami Kanzashi Flower workshop @ Kimono Photo Studio WA

I offered a Tsumami Kanzashi Flower workshop at Kimono Photo Studio WA in Meguro, Tokyo. "Tsumami Kanzashi Flower" is Japanese traditional hand craft, mainly used by kimono girls for their hair accessories, and most of the studio's hair accessories are hand made in this way. (Yes, I made them!)

Materials and tools... This craft does not need needles,  it is very good point that you can make Tsumami Kanzashi Flower only with glue.

Making the petals one by one with tweezers, need concentration!

This participant was a sewing professional, so she tried to make intermediate one. Very nice work!

I offer this workshop with your request. It includes all the materials and English text. You can make your own Kanzashi-flower with 1~2 hours. This work-shop needs reservation one week advance, and have various samples according to the prices and difficulty, so please ask us for more details if you are interested.

Tsumami Kanzashi Flower workshop in “All about Kimono Fair”

I wrote about Tsumami Kanzashi Flower before, and I finally held my Tsumami Kanzashi Flower work shop in “All about Kimono Fair.” on Feb 8th and 9th.

There are 2 participants on 1st session. Both pf them like kimonos very much and are skillful with their fingers, they made flower pins very well!

Very pretty and well done!

Even though the techniques and complex are various, Tsumami Kanzashi Flower is easy to make for the first step. No needles and threads are needed. Only glue is needed. If you can fold origami paper, you can make the flowers in this photo.

I will start this Tsumami Kanzashi Flower workshop regularly from April! Now I am busy with preparing instructions and fabrics. At my workshop, you can choose the color of the fabric and the type of base (hair-pins and corsage pin). I will prepare everything such as tweezers and glue, so no need to bring anything.

I will release the date and price soon. The place is KIMONO PHOTO STUDIO WA.

Tsumami Kanzashi Flower - How to make a cherry blossom flower

Here is how to make a cherry blossom flower pin. Materials are 5 square pieces of 2.5cm x 2.5cm rayon chirimen(crepe) fabricrounded cardboard (2cm diameter), rayon chirimen (crepe) fabric to cover the cardboard, and a hairpin. Also glue and tweezers are needed.

I am writing briefly... cherry blossom flower is made from pointed petals.  Same as rounded petal 1, 2 & 3.

1. Fold the fabric in half and make it triangle.
2. Fold again in half and make a smaller triangle.
3. Place the tweezers a little up from the center and pinch the fabric. Fold the both lower sides up to the top of the triangle.
4. Before you place the petal on the glue board, put a little bit glue on the head of the petal and push the tweezers inside the petal. Keep 10 seconds.

One rounded petal completed.
5. Then, make 5 petals and place on the glue board for a while.

5. Cover the rounded cardboard with wood bond by fabric, and place the wood bond on a hairpin. Place 5 petals on it.

6. Adjust the shape and place a bead and flower heads at the center.

Now I start Tsumami Kanzashi Flower workshop. Let's make this pretty hairpin together.

Japanese Traditional hand craft, Tsumami-zaiku (Tsumami Kanzashi Flower)

I am currently learning "Tsumami Kanzashi Flower," which is one of the Japanese traditional hand crafts and was developed in 18th century.  By pinching and folding small square pieces of fabric with tweezers, flowers and birds can be made, and they are usually for hair accessories for girls in kimono. No needles and sewing is needed for this craft, they are put together by glue.

These are the ones I made so far. You can make them easily as long as the flowers are simple ones.

Today, I challenge to make a bigger hair piece.  Here are the parts (wire, beads, string and pieces of fabric etc.)

By pinching and folding by tweezers, I made flowers one after the other.

Finally I made it! It was a little tough and time taking for me... but I think I made it pretty good.  I would like to use these kinds of hair pieces for kimono photo shooting and also would like to offer experience sessions for tourists soon. Please look forward to it!
